Fraxinus Americana
Deciduous hardwood. Straight trunk up to 60cm diameter. Bark light grey with furrowed pattern. Twigs stout. Leaves opposite & stalked with compound leaves -usually 7 leaflets on each leaf. Has winged seeds.
A tough strong yet pliable wood, used by aborginal peoples for fish spears, canoes, snow shoes and baskets. Used for sporting goods today. Wildlife use: bud, leaf, seed, sap, bark, twigs eaten by mammals and birds. Ash keys are a staple for woodland rodents. Photo credit: Rebecca Krawczyk.
