Flowers white, appearing from May to July. Fruit berrylike, dark purple when ripe.A popular scrub for wildlife, its fruits attractive to birds and butterflies. Does best in an open field away from the woods to allow for free air movement. Frost tolerant. Partially self-fertile but cross-pollination increases fruit production, therefore two or more cultivars should be planted in close proximity.

Fruit is popular in making jams, jellies, pies and wine. Photo credit: Rebecca Krawczyk.
